Breaking boundaries, changing lives

Crystal Smith, elected chief councillor of the Haisla First Nation in Kitimat, is the latest indigenous leader speaking out against threats of violence.

Chief Smith's community is partnering with Coastal Gas Link and LNG Canada to build the most significant emissions-reduction project in Canadian history. She tells her story in this interview published by Brandi Morin (Twitter @Songstress28), a Cree/Iroquois/French journalist.

"I've been called many names, but one thing...makes me think of our indigenous culture. Our Haisla law states how we conduct ourselves as Haisla people. One of our laws is not to treat people with disrespect even though they treat us with disrespect."
