This slide is important because it shows where LNG is most powerful in producing climate benefits. The production phases (lefthand side) are relatively low in CO2 emissions. The far right is where most of the greenhouse gases are produced.
As shown in the previous slide, LNG burns much more cleanly than coal. Since the lion's share of LNG emissions occurs in the combustion phase, this is also where the greatest benefits show up. (Source of this slide is here.)
As a result, any attempt to judge LNG's life cycle phases in isolation can be quite misleading. For example, judging only its emissions during the production phases means that the large benefits occurring further downstream are ignored. Anyone who is genuinely concerned about climate change as a global issue must take account of the overall life cycle.
